Elimination of Single Use Plastic Shopping Bags in the RM of Coldwell and Lud of Lundar
10/01/2008
Single Use Plastic Shopping bags are a very visible component of litter along the roadside and the nuisance ground. They have a negative impact on our wildlife habitat and are not environmentally friendly. With the use of reusable multi-use shopping bags there is a positive impact of recycling.
The RM of Coldwell included a blurb in the tax notice of their intent to eliminate plastic shopping bags giving property owners a chance to comment. Then a public hearing was advertised in 2 issues of the Interlake Spectator to give everyone an opportunity to speak for or against By-Law 07/2008 before giving it 3rd reading. As there were no objections the By-Law was given 3rd reading at the August 12, 2008 regular meeting. Two enacts of the By-Law are:
That the RM of Coldwell be Single Use Plastic Shopping Bag Free effective October 1, 2008.
That retailers in the RM of Coldwell will not be permitted to give away or sell plastic shopping bags that are intended for single use.
